Hazards of the DC streets March 6, 2008

Here’s a first try at a post with a couple of pictures.

DC storms tend to be a bit capricious. A cloudy day can turn to a drizzle and then a violent downpour in just a few minutes—and back again just as quickly. Around 11:00 PM Tuesday night I was waiting for Nancy to come home from the gym when I heard a loud crash. She walked in a minute later and told me that a tree just down the street had fallen on a couple of cars. I grabbed the camera and flash, and we were the second people to arrive 6th Street was entirely blocked by the fallen tree.  A Hummer SUV had been severely damaged, and another car had its rear window broken in. I called the Fire Department, who showed up about 10 minutes later. It’s a good thing I took pictures before they got there, because they had chainsaws and made short work of the tree. The cars were towed away by the next day . . . I hope their insurance covers random accidents.
